Obstacle Course

10th February 2022Jodie Wilkinson

This week the children have continued talking and exploring ways to stay healthy, focusing on gross motor skills.

We set up an obstacle course in the garden for the children to explore.

The children enjoyed using different ways to move across the obstacles. Balancing along the wooden beam, crawling through the tunnel, crossing over the bridge, through the hoops  and under the bridge.

We introduced the vocabulary related to  positional language- under, over, through, on top.

Can you think of different ways to move your bodies at home?

Being Independent

9th February 2022Jodie Wilkinson

To become independent, children have to be confident in their own abilities.

Their confidence grows through opportunities to try new things in a safe and supportive environment with lots of positive reinforcement.

When given opportunities to be independent they can often surprise us! The children have been;

  • Serving lunch
  • Preparing snack
  • Putting on their coats and waterproof clothing
  • Putting on their socks, shoes and wellies

Chinese Dragon Dance

4th February 2022Jodie Wilkinson

The children enjoyed dressing up and performing a Chinese dragon dance!

The Chinese dragon dance is a festive performance that’s most often seen during the Chinese New Year celebrations. This is because the dragon is seen to be a symbol of luck in Chinese culture.

Chinese New Year

4th February 2022Jodie Wilkinson

The children have been celebrating Chinese New Year this week in nursery.

We have made our own dragons, using scissors to make snips in the tissue paper. We continued to practice cutting skills by making Chinese lanterns and kites to fly in the wind.

The children have been practicing fire safety around the fire pit and have made curry noodles to enjoy with prawn crackers, we also wrote special messages to hide inside our fortune cookies.

Celebrating Chinese New Year provides the children with an opportunity to explore another culture and their traditions.

Exploring Water

3rd February 2022Jodie Wilkinson

We have been having lots of fun exploring water!

Before we went into the garden, we had to put on our waterproof clothing. We are trying really hard to take off our shoes and put on the waterproof clothing ourselves, this is really tricky but with lots of practise, it is getting easier!

We had lots of fun, using the garden tap to fill the buckets and watering cans. We made lots of puddles to jump in, this made a big Splash.

We used the pipes to explore the flow of water. We even made a water slide for the duck! There were lots of containers to fill and empty. We even made lots of marks with the water and the paint rollers and brushes.

We love to play with the water!

Self Portraits

3rd February 2022Jodie Wilkinson

The children have been using pencils and pastels to create self portraits.

Through self portraits children develop fine motor skills, in addition self portraits give us a clear picture of a child’s awareness of his/her own body.

Children used mirrors to study facial features and to work out how it all fits together through observation.

We have sang lots of songs about teeth too! We also got a new toothbrush to take home with lots of information for our grown ups and ideas to help us look after our teeth.
